Original Beatles Drummer Pete Best Announces Retirement

Drumming News

Pete Best, the original drummer for The Beatles, has officially retired from live performances and public appearances. The news was shared by his brother Roag Best on April 5, 2025, via Facebook, noting the decision was due to personal circumstances relayed by Pete’s daughter.

Best, who turned 83 last November, was originally replaced by Ringo Starr in August 1962—just before The Beatles skyrocketed to global fame. Despite the early exit, Best maintained a loyal following and continued performing with his own band in recent years, including a U.S. tour in early 2025. A planned show in Liverpool this August has now been cancelled.

Best’s brief but significant role in Beatles history began in August 1960 when he was hired just days before the band’s departure for Hamburg. Although he didn’t quite fit in personally with the others, he left a lasting impression—especially among early fans.

Though he distanced himself from the band after his departure, his contributions were finally recognized in the 1995 Anthology project, earning him both acclaim and royalties.

After decades of navigating the highs and lows of Beatlemania from the outside, Pete Best seems ready to close the curtain on a truly unique rock ‘n’ roll journey.
