The Return of the Iconic Simmons Drum Pads: A New Chapter in Electronic Drum History

Drumming News

In an exciting development for drum enthusiasts and electronic music producers alike, reported by DigitalDrummer, Martin Wheetman, a former engineer at Simmons Drums, has joined forces with a few of his former colleagues to revive the legendary ‘80s drum brand. This collaboration marks the return of a revered name in the electronic drum world, known for its groundbreaking SDSV series and distinctive drum pads.

Wheetman, who played an instrumental role in the design and production of Simmons’ iconic electronic drum kits, has recently unveiled a new range of SDSV piezo pads. Staying true to the methods used during the ‘80s, these new pads offer an authentic taste of vintage electronic drumming, made with the same quality craftsmanship that helped establish the brand’s legacy.

Consulting the Pioneers of Simmons Drums

Wheetman has been working closely with Dave Simmons, the mastermind behind the original brand, who has been consulting on the project. “Colin Schofield has been doing a fantastic job putting the pads together,” Wheetman told digitalDrummer. Schofield, who also has extensive experience in electronic drum production, has played a crucial role in ensuring the pads maintain the quality and feel of the classic Simmons sound.

Two Versions of the Iconic Pad

The new range of SDSV pads comes in two distinct versions. The first features the original polycarbonate playing surface, often referred to as the “wrist-breaker” for its dense and highly responsive nature. For those who prefer a softer feel, the second version offers a rubber playing surface, giving drummers a versatile option for both feel and durability.

In addition to the classic look and feel, the new pads provide several connection options. Drummers can choose between XLR, ¼” jacks, or a combination of both, offering flexibility for different setups and preferences. The pads are available in a variety of colours: black and white for the polycarbonate surface and black, white, red, or yellow for the rubber models.

Global Distribution and Availability

The new SDSV pads are already being distributed in the UK, with former Simmons German head Sibi Siebert handling distribution across Europe through his Sky Music Distribution business. Though stocks are currently limited, Wheetman has hinted that production volumes will increase, so it won’t be long before more drummers can get their hands on these sought-after pads.

Wheetman is also excited to tease that the pads are only the beginning. “The pads are only part of the story,” he mentioned, leaving fans wondering what other products could be in the works.

A Resurgence of Interest in Vintage E-Drums

The revival of the Simmons brand comes at a time when interest in original analogue electronic drum gear has soared. After the last Simmons equipment rolled off the assembly line in 1999, the pads, modules, and other components quickly became collector’s items. As a result, any second-hand gear that hits the market is eagerly snapped up by electronic drummers looking to capture the unique sounds of the past.

Now, with the resurgence of these classic pads, drummers can once again experience the sound and feel of the iconic SDSV series without having to scour the second-hand market for rare finds. The combination of nostalgia, craftsmanship, and the growing demand for vintage electronic instruments means this new venture is poised to be a hit.

Looking Ahead: The Return of a Legacy

The future of Simmons Drums looks brighter than ever. Thanks to the hard work and dedication of Wheetman, Simmons, Schofield, Siebert, and other former team members, the iconic hexagonal pads are making a comeback. Though we’re still waiting for the official announcement, the excitement surrounding the revival of this legendary brand is palpable.

As the project progresses, drummers can look forward to more information and products. For now, fans can get a sneak peek of the new pads—here’s a glimpse of what’s to come.
