2025 is shaping up to be a groundbreaking year in the drumming world, as legendary drummer John “JR” Robinson makes a major move. At the 2025 NAMM Show, Robinson officially announced that he has joined forces with Istanbul Mehmet Cymbals, unveiling his brand-new John ‘JR’ Robinson Signature Cymbal Line.
In a heartfelt video promoting the new cymbals, Robinson shared, “Mehmet has engraved his soul into this set of cymbals.” The collaboration marks an exciting chapter for both Robinson and Istanbul Mehmet, with both parties enthusiastic about the unique partnership.
The John ‘JR’ Robinson Signature Cymbal Line
The new cymbal line includes the following sizes:
- 15” Hi-Hats
- 18” Crash
- 20” Crash
- 22” Ride
- 24” Swish (with rivets)
Each cymbal is designed to reflect Robinson’s versatile playing style, offering dynamic and expressive sounds tailored to a wide range of musical genres.
John ‘JR’ Robinson: A Drumming Icon
A musical prodigy, John Robinson started playing piano at the age of 5 and switched to drums at 8. By age 10, he was already performing in his first band. His early recognition included the prestigious Arion Award for Most Outstanding Musician in high school, before heading to Berklee College of Music in Boston.
Robinson’s career took off in 1978 when he joined Rufus and Chaka Khan, scoring his first Grammy with the hit single “Ain’t Nobody.” Over the years, he became known as the most recorded drummer in history, with an astounding 500 million records sold.
Now, with his signature cymbal line, Robinson continues to redefine drumming excellence—bringing his lifetime of expertise to Istanbul Mehmet cymbals and creating a sound that’s all his own.
