Drumming News
Iron Maiden drummer Nicko McBrain, 72, has announced his retirement from touring after more than 40 years with the band. In a statement shared today (December 7), McBrain revealed that his final show with Iron Maiden will be in São Paulo, Brazil.
After much reflection, McBrain explained, “It is with both sorrow and joy that I announce my decision to step back from the grind of extensive touring.” While retiring from the road, he will remain involved with the band on other projects, including his businesses like The British Drum Company and Rock-N-Roll Ribs.
McBrain expressed deep gratitude to his fans, family, and bandmates, saying, “Touring with Maiden these last 42 years has been an incredible journey.” He also thanked his wife, Rebecca, and his children, Justin and Nicholas, for their support.
Iron Maiden manager Rod Smallwood praised McBrain’s contributions, calling him an “irrepressible force” behind the drum kit for over four decades, and promised that the band would continue with a new drummer, to be announced soon.
This retirement follows McBrain’s recovery from a stroke in early 2023 and his battle with laryngeal cancer in 2021. Despite these health challenges, McBrain was able to continue playing with the band. He leaves a lasting legacy in Iron Maiden’s iconic sound and in the hearts of fans worldwide.
