Veteran rock pioneers Primus have put out the call for their next drummer, marking a pivotal moment in the band’s 40th-anniversary year. Following the sudden departure of longtime drummer Tim “Herb” Alexander, the band shared an open invitation for drummers from “all points in the universe” to audition for the coveted spot behind the kit.
In a post on social media on November 18, Primus outlined their vision for the ideal candidate, seeking someone who balances technical skill with creative intuition. “Flashy chops are wonderful,” the band noted, “but groove, pocket, and the ability to listen, react, and contribute to the musical conversation is a must.”
Tim Alexander’s Departure: A Shock to All
The search for a new drummer comes on the heels of Tim Alexander’s unexpected exit from the band in October. Alexander, who has had multiple stints with Primus since 1989, announced his resignation via email, citing a “loss of passion for playing.”
In their statement, Primus frontman Les Claypool and guitarist Larry LaLonde admitted the news left them stunned. “On the heels of a wonderful spring & summer of touring and some fabulous plans ahead, it has been a bit bewildering for us that Herb would so abruptly opt out,” the duo shared.

In a candid interview with Rolling Stone, Alexander explained that the decision was rooted in a need to prioritize his physical and mental health. “Over time, I started realizing that it was affecting my physical life, my mental life, and my family life,” he said. “I had to sit and think about exactly what I was doing.”
Alexander also reflected on the toll of decades behind the drums. “My body hurts. My hands hurt. My back hurts,” he admitted, pointing to the physical demands of a career in music as a key factor in his decision. Despite the challenges, he expressed gratitude for his years with Primus and excitement for his next chapter, which includes teaching drums to aspiring musicians.
Danny Carey and Interim Plans
With Alexander stepping away, Primus has enlisted high-profile help to navigate their immediate commitments. Tool drummer Danny Carey will fill in for the band’s March performance at Tool’s “Live in the Sand” festival in the Dominican Republic. Additionally, Primus plans to continue with their annual New Year’s Eve show in Oakland, California, featuring members of Les Claypool’s other projects like Holy Mackerel and Frog Brigade.
Despite these temporary solutions, the search for a permanent drummer is now the band’s priority. Whoever steps into the role will face a steep challenge: not only maintaining the intricate, experimental grooves that have defined Primus’ sound, but also keeping pace with the band’s upcoming commitments, including a spring tour with A Perfect Circle and Puscifer.
What It Takes to Be Primus’ Drummer
Primus’ open call isn’t just about finding a technically proficient musician; it’s about discovering someone who embodies the spirit of collaboration and experimentation that has defined the band for four decades.
The band’s social media post highlights the importance of musical sensibility and congeniality over mere technical ability. “We’re looking for a well-mannered, affable individual with original sensibility and aesthetic, possessing a desire to open new doors in the creative world,” the message read.
For fans familiar with Primus’ unconventional style, the role demands a unique balance of precision and creativity. Tracks like “Jerry Was a Race Car Driver” and “My Name Is Mud” showcase complex time signatures, dynamic grooves, and an innate sense of musical conversation between the band’s members.
A Rare Opportunity
Primus’ decision to open the audition process to the public is a rare move for a band of their stature. For drummers passionate about pushing boundaries, this is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to join one of rock’s most idiosyncratic acts.
Whether you’re a seasoned touring musician or a virtuoso still waiting for your big break, this could be your moment to enter the spotlight. If you think you have what it takes, submit your résumé and video performance to drumsearch@primusville.com. Who knows — you might find yourself behind the kit for Primus’ next tour. Good luck!
