Meet the Talented Drummer Redefining the Role of Women in Drumming – ODEBIYI TEMITOPE (aka TOPSTICKS).
While the tradition of drumming in Africa remains male-dominated, Topsticks is breaking barriers, opening doors and changing perceptions by using her drumming and her platform to advocate for her community. She stands out as a shining example of talent, passion, and dedication— making waves with her infectious beats and inspiring story.
At 14, despite the social and cultural taboos on female drumming, Topsticks’ lifelong passion for drumming ignited into action. Having harbored a deep love for rhythm since age 4, she finally found her outlet. Watching her church’s worship team sparked the opportunity to express her talent. Topsticks began playing drums at Victory International Church in Ibadan, Nigeria, where she developed a distinctive style fusing traditional gospel beats with modern flair.
In 2009, Topsticks joined The Breath of Life Ministry in Lagos, marking a pivotal moment in her career. She recorded her debut single, “OMO ENIYAN – SON OF MAN,” which resonated nationally and globally. This breakthrough led to numerous collaborations, as she recorded drum tracks for many renowned gospel artists in Nigeria and across the continent.
Topsticks’ captivating solo performances and musical interpretations propelled her to prominence in Nigeria’s gospel music scene. Her unique expression, blending technical skill with spiritual passion, made her a sought-after drummer in churches and concerts across Africa.
As a versatile drummer, Topsticks collaborated with various bands, gracing stages nationwide. Her distinctive approach to gospel songs and prayerful drum expressions, often accompanying prominent men of God, earned her recognition and further established her reputation.
Topsticks performed at the Muson Festival with the legendary Victor Olaiya and Victor Uwaifo, she performed at several drum festivals as well as Youth Conferences in Nigeria and Ghana. She has also shared stage with renowned artists such as Ebenezer Obey, Midnight crew, Tim Godfrey, Cobhams and Sammy Okposu, among others.
In 2018 Topsticks accepted the position of Regional Ambassador for the Hit Like A Girl organization and formed a network of representatives in Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Kenya, Tanzania, Sudan, Nigeria, Kenya and Ghana. In 2022 she founded the Drum Queens Festival, an annual event celebrating female drummers and empowering women in music. The festival has become a beacon for aspiring female musicians around the world, providing a platform for networking, workshops, and showcase performances.
Today Topsticks’ mission extends beyond Africa and beyond music. She aims to inspire women and girls to pursue their passions, regardless of industry or societal expectations. Through drumming workshops and mentorship programs, she empowers the next generation. Her remarkable journey serves as a testament to perseverance, creativity, and faith. As a trailblazing female drummer, she continues to break barriers and inspire the next wave of male and female musicians.
Topsticks cites Sheila E, Dave Weckl, Steve Smith, Aaron Spears, Calvin Rodgers, Tony Royster, Cindy Blackman, K Sticks, Steve Dregs and many more as inspirations— blending their drumming styles with her own innovative approach. Her playing is a mixture of gospel drumming techniques, polyrhythms and Jazz, making her the versatile and popular player she has become.
