Amelia Bonner, a 20-year-old steel drum musician, is making her mark in the world of music with a blend of passion and dedication. Currently a junior at Coastal Carolina University, she is double majoring in general music studies for percussion and physical therapy. Her journey with the steel pan began in childhood, thanks to her father’s encouragement to take lessons.

“There’s so much emotion that can be expressed through this instrument,” Bonner said. “The cultural background is also fascinating.”

Bonner performs regularly, showcasing her skills at concerts, solo events, and school functions. “I love the opportunities to play and meet others who share my passion,” she explained.

She also appreciates the unique history of the steel drum. “This drum comes from Trinidad and Tobago and was originally made from oil tanks, which were cut and tuned to create different pitches. While it’s relatively easy to start playing, mastering it is a different story,” she noted.

Her repertoire is diverse, covering a range of genres from classical to rock. “I’ve played pieces by Bach, Ravel, Steely Dan, and even Metallica,” she mentioned. However, she has a special affinity for Calypso music.

Looking to the future, Bonner has ambitions of touring and performing full-time. “I would love to travel and play with various bands, including those associated with Jimmy Buffet,” she stated.

As one of the few female steel drummers, Bonner aims to inspire others. “It’s important not to let anyone discourage you or limit your potential,” she advised. “I’m focused on building my path, and I believe my efforts are making an impact in the community.”
