Since its introduction in 1994, Tama’s Starclassic series has been a significant player in the drumming world, known for its continual evolution and varied sound profiles. Over the years, the series has featured different drum shell materials, each offering a distinct tonal quality. From Maple and Birch to Bubinga and Birch/Bubinga, these variations have provided drummers with a wide range of sound options to suit their individual styles.

The latest development in the Starclassic line is the Starclassic Walnut/Birch. This new iteration reflects Tama’s ongoing efforts to refine and enhance drum sound. The Walnut/Birch shells result from extensive research and testing, aimed at achieving an optimal combination of materials for a balanced sound experience. The shells feature a mix of Walnut and Birch, designed to offer both warmth and clarity.

The new configuration includes 6mm thick tom and floor tom shells, with 4-ply European Birch on the outer layers and 2-ply American Black Walnut on the inside. The bass drum shell, which is 8mm thick, incorporates 5-ply European Birch for the outer layers and 2-ply American Black Walnut for the interior. This setup aims to provide a rich, clear tone with a balanced blend of low-to-mid frequency warmth and the sharp attack of Birch.

The Starclassic Walnut/Birch series also includes several notable hardware features. The drums are equipped with die-cast hoops, the Star-Cast Mounting System, and Quick-Lock tom brackets. These elements are intended to offer precise tuning and stability. The die-cast hoops, made from high-density zinc, are designed to ensure consistent tuning and a refined tone. The drumheads are selected to match the Walnut/Birch shells: Evans Genera G2 2-ply clear batter heads and Genera G1 1-ply clear bottom heads for the toms, and an EQ4 clear batter head for the bass drum. This setup aims to provide durability and a range of tonal options.

Key Features of the TAMA Starclassic Walnut/Birch 5-Piece Shell Pack:

– Warmth and Punch: The combination of Walnut and Birch provides a blend of warmth and a punchy attack.

– Die-Cast Zinc Hoops: Designed for consistent tuning and enhanced resonance.

– Rubber-Based Claw Hooks: Aim to maintain consistent pressure and reduce rattling.

– Air Pocket Rubber Feet: Help preserve sustain by minimizing vibration transfer to the floor.

Overall, the Starclassic Walnut/Birch series continues Tama’s tradition of refining drum technology and sound. With its new material combination and hardware features, the Walnut/Birch series adds another chapter to the Starclassic legacy.
