The first episode of “Confluence” is now streaming on PBS.org, and it features an engaging segment where Will’s friends—physicist Stephon Alexander, bassist Melvyn Gibbs, and himself—come together to jam as “God Particle.” This segment stands out for its exploration of Alexander’s innovative theories and how music relates to Quantum Physics.

Stephon Alexander is both a distinguished physicist and a jazz saxophonist. His work delves into the profound connections between the smallest and largest scales of the universe, extending beyond traditional concepts like Einstein’s curved space-time and the big bang theory. His favorite equation is Einstein’s field equation, which he discusses in his autobiographical work, *The Jazz of Physics*.

Alexander’s dual passion for physics and jazz has shaped his approach to cosmology. Influenced by the works of John Coltrane and other musicians who also explored cosmic themes, he began his journey in physics with guidance from his 10th-grade teacher, Daniel Kaplan, who sparked his interest with discussions on velocity and friction. In 2006, Alexander was recognized as one of National Geographic’s inquisitive experimenters and explorers. His contributions to science were further acknowledged in 2023 when he received the Isaac Asimov Award from the American Humanist Association.
