New Releases from Hudson Music Focusing On Snare Drum, Pocket, and Odd Times

Drumming News

Hudson Music has announced the release of four new books, out this week.

Daniel Bédard presents a challenging and fun collection of contemporary snare drum solos for all styles of drummers. Prepared under the encouragement of late Wizdom Media founder Dom Famularo, the book addresses all the various aspects of musical control for the snare drummer and drum set player.

In these 20 snare drum solos, you’ll find many varied themes, including rudimental playing; triplet-oriented pieces; paradiddle-oriented solos; 3/4, 5/4, and 7/8 time signatures; single-stroke studies; slow and fast solos; roll-oriented solos; rhythmic combinations; solos with rests; and much more. Most of the solos are built around 4- or 8-bar phrases so that you can only focus on a small chunk of information if needed.

  • Twenty challenging snare drum solos.
  • Rudiments
  • Polyrhythms
  • Odd Times
  • Slow and fast tempos
  • Includes audio files of all solos

In this unique book, you will play snare drum solos along with important jazz legends. Author Albie Berk takes classic and important jazz recordings and presents snare drum solos to go along with those recordings. What makes this book different is that you will be playing along with the soloists, not the drummers.

The snare drum solos in this book were inspired by and based on performances by some of Berk’s favorite jazz artists. Each solo is based on the melody and instrumental solos of jazz legends like Chick Corea, Keith Jarrett, Ella Fitzgerald, Charlie Parker, and others. These recordings, some of which date back to the 1940s, are classics. The versions referenced are all available on YouTube and all streaming services, and the solos are intended to be played along with these recordings. At the same time, you will also be playing along with great rhythm sections that define the phrase “in the pocket.”

For rock drummers, this book can be a bridge to developing a jazz feel by playing along with these greats. The solos are not rudimental in nature. While the rudiments are referenced, the book is designed to guide you and help you develop a jazz feel. Ultimately, this is a book to help your improvisational skills.

Linear Drumming II, by Camilo Torres, is the result of a development formula I called the “Mirror Effect” or simply voice reassignment, involving rotation or combination of bass drum, snare drum, and hi-hat (the three main voices of the drum kit). This allows for the creation of three new variations or formulas from a main groove, with the aim of generating a macro and expansive development from a single predetermined idea or groove, as previously presented in Linear Drumming I (Hudson Music).

Linear Drumming II is developed entirely based on the exercises extracted from Linear Drumming I. By applying this “mirror effect” and its three variations to each of them (576 x 3), a total of 1,728 exercises are generated…Without a doubt, a linear paradise!
