The drumming world recently mourned the loss of a true legend: Joe Montineri, a master craftsman and designer whose impact on the industry is immeasurable. On April 24, 2024, Joe Montineri passed away, leaving behind a legacy that will forever echo through the rhythms of music history.
As news of Joe’s passing spread, a collective sense of grief enveloped the drum community, both in print and online media. For many, Joe wasn’t just a builder of drums; he was a revered figure whose instruments shaped the sound of countless recordings and performances. Famous drummers around the globe have extolled the virtues of his creations, with many citing his snares as their personal favorites.
In the words of Bun E. Carlos, “What a great guy! Joe will be missed by all of us drummers that knew him. Rest in peace Joe.” His sentiment echoes the sentiments of countless others who had the honor of crossing paths with Joe throughout his illustrious career.
Phil Hood, original owner, and editor of DRUM! magazine, aptly described Joe as the father of the modern era of boutique drum making. Indeed, Joe’s influence in the ’80s paved the way for a new generation of custom drum builders, inspiring them to pursue excellence in their craft.
DW Drums took to Instagram to post the following: DW is sad to learn of the passing of respected drum builder Joe Montineri. He was a mentor and close friend of DW co-founder and SVP, John Good, who taught John crucial elements of building drums, including how to timbre match shells. Joe was well known throughout the industry and his influence and presence brought joy and inspiration to countless people. His absence will be deeply felt and DW sends sincere condolences to Joe’s family, friends, and community.
George Lawrence of Not So Modern Drummer writes: If I rang Joe or he rang me, it was going to be an hour-long conversation with lots of laughter and lots of griping and bitching – all very enjoyable – Joe knew his stuff. Joe ordered one of my DrumWrapper machines when he was working with Keller products. My favorite Joe Montineri quote, ‘Hey man, I just bought 100 sheets of dayglo fluorescent green wrap from Delmar. How many do you want?’. HA! Job well done, Joe, and life well lived.
Joe’s journey in music began in his hometown of Hartford, Connecticut, where he was born to Sonia and Paul Montineri. He grew up in Bloomfield, CT, graduating from Bloomfield High School in 1969. A talented percussionist, Joe honed his skills at Hartt College of Music, where he studied percussion.
Throughout his life, Joe’s passion for drum building was palpable. He founded Joe Montineri Custom Drums, a name synonymous with quality and innovation in the industry. His handcrafted drums graced stages around the world, providing the backbone for countless beats and rhythms.
But Joe’s impact went beyond his instruments. He was a mentor, a friend, and a constant source of knowledge, always willing to share his expertise and foster a sense of community within the drumming world.
As we bid farewell to Joe Montineri, we honor his legacy and the indelible mark he left on the world of drumming. His passion, craftsmanship, and generosity will continue to inspire generations of drummers for years to come. Rest in peace, Joe. God bless.
