AC/DC, the iconic rock band, is set to embark on their first tour in eight years, bringing joy to fans worldwide. However, there’s a bittersweet note as two classic members, bassist Cliff Williams and drummer Phil Rudd, will not be gracing the stage. The absence of Phil Rudd is particularly notable, and the reason behind it is both heartfelt and poignant.
Phil Rudd is currently prioritizing the care of his partner, Toni Wilson, who is bravely battling stage four breast cancer. This personal commitment has led him to step back from the upcoming AC/DC tour. In the absence of Rudd, the drummer position will be filled by Matt Laug, who already showcased his skills at last year’s Power Trip festival performance with the band.
In a candid interview with the Stuff website, Phil Rudd expressed the deep emotional toll of witnessing a loved one facing a life-threatening illness. He revealed, “I’d give it all up, throw it on a bonfire if it meant it would give Toni more time. She’s the love of my life. My best friend.” Rudd emphasized the priceless value of time over material possessions, sharing his decision to sell off his rock and roll memorabilia, including cars, drum kits, and awards, to raise funds for the New Zealand Cancer Foundation.
Reflecting on life’s priorities, Rudd drew parallels between the pain of losing AC/DC’s original vocalist, Bon Scott, in 1980 and the current challenge with Toni’s health. He emphasized the newfound perspective that success and hit records pale in comparison to the importance of friends and family. Despite his commitment to return to playing with AC/DC in the future, Rudd acknowledged the immediate need to prioritize and take care of Toni during this challenging period.
In the midst of AC/DC’s triumphant return to the stage, Phil Rudd’s decision to prioritize love and family over fame serves as a poignant reminder of life’s true priorities.
