James Kottak, best known for his supportive roles in bands like Scorpions and Kingdom Come has died. The news of his passing was shared by his former bandmates from Scorpions through a heartfelt Facebook post on Tuesday. At 61, Kottak leaves behind a legacy as a remarkable musician, a loving family man, and a cherished friend.

The cause of James Kottak’s death has not been disclosed. The band’s emotional tribute described him as a “wonderful human being” and expressed their deep sorrow at the loss of their “Brother from another Mother.” The post ended with a poignant declaration of “Rock ‘n Roll Forever” and “RIP James.”

Back in September 2022, Drumming News Network had reported concerns about Kottak’s health, with friends expressing worries. His involvement with Kingdom Come, whose recent performance at a rock festival in Sweden received criticism, sparked discussions about his well-being. Despite the backlash, fellow musicians like bassist Robbie Crane voiced empathy and emphasized the personal struggle Kottak faced with addiction.

The drummer’s journey in the music industry was notable, joining Scorpions in 1996 and making history as the first American musician to play in the German rock group. Kottak contributed significantly to their 1999 album “Eye II Eye.” His departure in September 2016 marked the end of an era with Motörhead drummer Mikkey Dee stepping in as his replacement.

Beyond Scorpions, Kottak showcased his drumming prowess in various bands, including Kingdom Come, Warrant, Buster Brown, The Cult, and his own punk rock group, Kottak. His eclectic career demonstrated his versatility and passion for music.

In his personal life, Kottak was married to drummer Athena Lee, sister of rock icon Tommy Lee, from 1996 to 2010. Together, they raised three children: sons Matthew and Miles, and daughter Tobi.
