Drumming News Network takes a closer look at Nicko McBrain’s new drum setup for Iron Maiden’s 2023 “The Future Past” tour.

Nicko has had some amazing drum sets over the years, but this must be the most detailed of them all. All metal parts that make up his set, including his cymbals and meant to look distressed and aged.

The toms and bass drum are covered with a custom printed wrap that is added at the time the shell is being created. He is continuing the Shogun “Eddie” character from their 2021 studio release Senjutsu.  Nicko mentions that the high gloss wrap is the first to go in the mold when they create the Icarus series shell.  The Icarus series of shell is a 10-ply shell consisting of the outer wrap, 8-plys of birch, and an internal finish ply that is black oak.  The bass drum is made of 25-ply’s.  His snare drum is his signature Talisman snare but panted black to match the rest of the set.

The drum sizes are as follows: 6×8, 8×8, 10×10, 12×12, 13×13, 14×14, 15×15,16×16 Rack Tom’s, 18×16 Floor Tom, and 24×18 Bass Drum

The hardware finish, aged copper, was done by Keith Keough, co-founder/Master Drum Builder of the British Drum Company. To create this look, first he had to remove the chrome in an acid dip, and then blowtorch all pieces of hardware.  It wasn’t mentioned but I am assuming he added a sealant of some kind.

Additional hardware Nicko is using includes the DW 9000 single pedal and 9000 series 2-leg hi-hat stand.  His pedal setting is interesting, he tightens the spring assembly as tight as possible by pulling the threaded rod down and screwing the lock nut to the top of the threads, bottoming up to the spring assembly flange on the pedal frame.  This positions the beater in roughly a 45-degree angle.

He requested Paiste to aged finish all of his cymbals as well, which look amazing.  The sizes are:

Cymbals:

15” Signature Heavy Full Crash

19” Signature Heavy Full Crash

16” Signature Heavy Full Crash

20” Signature Heavy Full Crash

18” Signature Heavy Full Crash

13” 602 Heavy Bell

22” “Powerslave” Nicko’s Signature Ride

17” Rude Crash

20” Signature Fast Medium Crash

22” Signature Full Crash

22” Signature Heavy China

15” Heavy Hi-Hat / with Signature Medium on bottom

40” Symphonic Gong (Standard Finish)

In June we announced that Nicko had switch to Code drum heads.  In this article we detailed the details of his “Boomer” signature heads. To learn why he switched, and the head details visit our earlier post by following the link: HERE

And his drumstick of choice continues to be the Vic Firth signature boomer – it’s a longer version of a 5B, roughly a quarter inch longer and between 5-6 grams heavier.
