This year is the 32nd Annual Chicago Drum Show and will be held May 20 & 21, 2023 in the Prairie Events Center / Kane County Fairgrounds, St Charles, Illinois. Visit www.rebeats.com/drumshows_start_page.html to learn more.
This interview is part of a series of cymbal smiths that will be on a panel at the Chicago Drum Show. You’ll be learning more about the craft and get to know these makers who are forging (pun intended) the future of cymbal making.
The cymbal making history is amazing and exciting to learn how these craftsmen are continuing that history. Cymbal crafting dates back hundreds of years and we learn more how the Zildjian family plays a role in so much of today’s handcrafted cymbal market.
Each craftsman has a different story, different approach, like custom drums in the 1990’s – these craftsmen are at the forefront of a new revolution in cymbal making.
If you can attend the Chicago Drum Show I suggest you do it, Rob Cook has put together an amazing panel of 8 of the leaders in this new and growing field. The cymbal Smiths in this panel are Ray Byrne / Bryne Cymbals (byrnecymbals.com), Dave Collingwood / Collingwood Cymbals (collingwoodcymbals.com), Burke Daugherty / Burke’s Work’s Cymbals (bronzepie.com), Paul Francis / Royal Cymbals (royalcymbals.com), Mike Mongiello/ Mongiello Cymbals (mongiellocymbals.com), Nicky Moon / NickyMoon Custom Cymbals LLC (nickymoon.com), Matt Nolan / Matt Nolan Custom (mattnolancustomcymbals.com), Timothy Roberts / Reverie Drum Co. (reveriedrums.com).
In this episode I speak with Nicky Moon of Nicky Moon custom cymbals. In addition, we learn about what makes him tick and his cymbals, we talk about many of the cymbals he is making and talk a bit about how he is crafting his own cymbal alloy.

About Matt:
Using hammers, anvils and fire Matt creates fine musical instruments, percussion instruments such as cymbals, gongs, tam-tams, triangles, and other items. He creates instruments for drummers, percussionists, composers, symphony orchestras, touring and recording artists and art collectors from all over the world. He believes making instruments as much “by hand” as possible, gives them the most character and range of expression.
