In a 2021 USA Today article Charlie talked about his hearing loss experience:
Benante started playing when he was four and joined up with the others in Anthrax right out of high school to create the band’s first album in 1984.
“There was no such thing as any ear monitoring back then,” he said. “A lot of times, what I would do is just put the foam earplugs in to absorb some of that high-end noise that was coming through. The high monitors that I would hear the rest of the guys from were very loud, very loud — because the band was very loud. So, I would have to compensate for that.”
Then, toward the end of the 1990s, in-ear monitors were put on the market. They molded to the wearer’s ear canal, and musicians could still hear their bandmates while keeping sound levels manageable.
“That pretty much saved the day, but I think the damage was done,” Benante said.
Just a few years ago, Benante admitted he was having a little difficulty hearing people speak, specifically certain word sounds. A hearing test confirmed that he had experienced significant hearing loss.
