Wow, the supergroup lineup that makes up the new Pantera performed their first show on December 2nd at the Heaven & Hell festival outside Mexico City. This is not a new Pantera line up or reunion of any sort as reinforced by Vinnie Paul estate in a statement released November 30th:
“There can never be a PANTERA reunion without Vinnie and Dime. However, there is no better way to celebrate and honor Vinnie and Dime’s legacy, than to bring the music of PANTERA directly to the fans. We are honored that Charlie and Zakk, their very close friends and musical brothers, will share the stage with Philip and Rex, to unleash the power of PANTERA live around the world.
The Vincent Paul Abbott Estate“
From the YouTube videos you can see that Charlie played a flawless and powerful set. There couldn’t have been a better decision than to choose Charlie to represent the new Pantera that is more of a tribute to the memory of it’s forming members Vinnie Paul and Dimebag Darrel Abbott. Keeping the memory of the founding members alive, Charlie had front bass drum heads with the likeness of Vinnie and Dime as well as two additional black heads placed on either side of the bass drums emblazoned with the CFH logo on them.
Their set included the Pantera classics: A New Level, Mouth For War, Strength Beyond Strength, Becoming, I’m Broken, Use My Third Arm, Drag The Waters, This Love, Yesterday Don’t Mean S#*t, F*#@ing Hostile, Planet Caravan (Black Sabbath cover), 5 Minutes Alone, Cowboys From Hell, Domination / Hollow, concluding with Walk.
Charlie took to Instagram to write of his experience:
“If I say I wasn’t nervous I’d be lying. The excitement , the fear, the emotions, the love and the work that went into doing this all played a part of what was in my head. When I got up there it had all seemed to disappear ( except for the cold 50 degree weather, 🥶) I looked at @philiphanselmo @rexbrownofficial and @zakkwyldebls and felt the connection, Bam!!!! New Level started and we were off. I kept looking down at my set list and was getting hyped up for the next song . Thank you #sterlingwinfield for bringing me an old @dimebagdarrell wristband and a pair of @vinniepaul3 old gloves . I wore the wristband and brought the gloves up with me. I had some moments up there like I felt I wasn’t there, I went to some other place. I think I was Metal meditating , don’t laugh… I’m serious. Thank to the @panteraofficial family, thank you to the crew and the amazing fans who have always been so positive about this. Thank you to @carlaharvey and @miacbenante for listening to me play Pantera songs day in and out. I look forward to seeing you all and having a great time playing these songs and reliving the feeling of what a great band they are!
🤘🤘🤘thanks to @chasethedrums for the vids and @thetinfoilbiter for the great photo”
