Hello, this is Paul Rogne of the Drumming News Network, this is not a review but more of my reflections on this evening’s (Thur 10/20) event. This will be followed up with a more in-depth review in the coming days of both evenings. This evening’s performance was so enjoyable that I would like to encourage you to watch Fridays (October 21st) performance. It features Kirk Covington, Adam Nussbaum, Jeff Hamilton, and Steve Smith. Tickets are priced very reasonably with access to the performance for a full year.
Host “Hitkor Kares” presentation of “A SALUTE TO THE BIG BAND GREATS” – DAY 1; Featuring Peter Erskine, Russ Miller, Dennis Chambers was a stunning tribute the great drummers Gene Krupa, Louie Bellson, and Buddy Rich. Filmed in high resolution and paired with crisp, well mixed audio; watching the performance felt like having the best seat in the house in the comfort of your home.
The pieces that were played were the songs that Buddy, Louie, and Gene made famous. Even if the style of music may not be your cup of tea – it’s rare you get to see these modern-day masters together in action, plus an amazing big band in support.
The event was well produced and moved well, between each drummers’ performances were tributes to Buddy, Louie, and Gene. I can only assume this evening’s performance will be the same, it moved fast. It was totally a different era in music as Russ Miller alluded to in his interview with, I believe Zildjian CEO John Stephans; but it was an important one.
In the interview with Dennis Chambers John asked about Dennis’ relationship with Louie Bellson. Dennis told the story of how he was honored that Louie Bellson would show up at many of his shows. At that time Louie was already a living legend and from all accounts a great guy and just an amazing human being. Unlike many of his contemporary drummers he seemed to hold the traits that so many of the greatest leaders in any art form hold – humility, openness to new ideas, and the love for the instrument. Dennis noticed he would listen with his eyes closed and later one evening asked Louie why he was there? What could he (Dennis) have to offer such a great. Louie’s reply – in so many words was – that you never stop learning.
This concert event is hosted by HITKOR Kares to honor music industry luminary, Sandy Feldstein. A portion of event sales will be donated to the NAMM Foundation, a 501cS charitable nonprofit organization, to support music education outreach programs. www.nammfoundation.org
For the diehard fans of these players, Hitkor is selling a poster of the event. There are a limited number of them that are signed by all of the drummers that performed in this event. The prices for the signed poster is only $75.00 USD with proceeds being donated as well. Get one before they are gone – I did.
